  • Soaking Up The Last Days Of Summer In The Art Strokes Top

Soaking Up The Last Days Of Summer In The Art Strokes Top

25 days until the official of Summer ’18.

Can you believe it?  Saying it aloud sounds unreal.  Summer just started, didn’t it?  Honestly, it was awesome on a business level…from making new connections, creating Fashion Not Fear; designs, collaborations and beyond.

Wish I could say the same on a personal level.  On a personal level, this has been the worst Summers of my life.  Simply put…losing loved ones is the worst.  There isn’t much else to say about that.

Rather than dwell on that, let’s focus on the good things about this Summer.  Like the Art Strokes Top.  This wrap top recently hit at the store and it has been in heavy rotation for me.  From jeans to denim shorts and everything in between!

My family recently spent the day at a lake.  Although, I had a bathing suit that I was dying to wear.  I didn’t have a coverup.  Scanning through my closet, I quickly realized what an awesome coverup it makes.

There is nothing like a relaxing day by the water with family and cocktails.  Might as well soak up the few days of sunny days that we have left.  Thoughts on the top??  Let me know in the comments…

  • Woke Wear: Easy Ways To Make More Ethical Fashion Choices

Woke Wear: Easy Ways To Make More Ethical Fashion Choices

We all know that it’s not always easy being a fashionista. There was a time when we had to wait an entire season to see fashion must haves that could wreak havoc with our bank balances. Now they seem to come from out of nowhere on a weekly basis. Have a care when dating us because we can spend hours getting ready before deciding the moment before we reach the door that we need to completely change our outfits. But in the information age, fashionistas must also grapple with the moral implications of the clothes we choose to wear. But while we know more about the moral cost of looking great these days, the good news is that we can still look amazing without it coming at the expense of the environment or the liberties of the people who make your clothes. You don’t have to completely change your lifestyle, just follow these easy guidelines.

    Forego fast fashion

In today’s increasingly fast moving world it’s easy to see why fast fashion holds a certain appeal. In an age where we can’t get enough of the latest big thing, fashion bloggers and their following need a constant stream of content to sate their appetites. But the simple truth is this… Fast fashion cannot exist without exploitation. As easy as it is to turn a blind eye to the human suffering that’s behind every low cost garment you see on the shelves, woke fashionistas are no longer prepared to feed this beast. Give your money to smaller designers, online boutiques, second hand thrift stores and brands who have chosen to take a stand against this exploitative practice that profits from child labor.

    Buy less, repair more

Textile waste is an unspoken but egregious contributor to the environmental damage we’re doing to our planet. In fact, it’s estimated that in the US alone the average person generates 82 pounds of textile waste a year. That all adds up to a whole lot of damage to the environment. Just because we want to look gorgeous all year round doesn’t mean that we must continue to contribute to the disposable mentality that sees many fine items of clothing thrown in the trash when they can be totally redeemed with a needle and thread, a couple of YouTube tutorials and just a dash of patience.

    Wool gotta go

We all know that fur is murder, but far fewer of us think twice when deciding to wear wool. After all, we may tell ourselves, sheep need to be shorn anyway just as hens need to lay eggs. Why shouldn’t we reap the benefits? But while these statements may both be true in principal they oversimplify the matter and overlook the fact that both the wool and egg industries have been responsible for the mass suffering and slaughter of innocent animals. The argument that sheep are supposed to produce wool is a fallacy that leads to the inhumane and painful handling of animals that leads them invariably straight into the slaughterhouse. While wool is ubiquitous, it can be replaced by organic cotton, linen or hemp.

Looking good needn’t have a huge ethical price tag.

  • Creating My Passion Almost Caused Me To Lose My Eye

Creating My Passion Almost Caused Me To Lose My Eye

I’ve shared so much of my journey in creating the Fashion Not Fear Collection.  From picking the fabrics, to enlisting the help of my mom and Aunt…you name it.  But I must admit that something terrified me during this process and I think it might be time to share it.
It had been a long day of sewing.  On this particular day, the sewing machine was not trying to work with me.  It was like we had gotten into an argument of something.  I started the day with 5 needles for the sewing machine that were tucked away in a drawer.  A few hours into the day, the machine stalled and the fabric was somehow stuck in the machine.  I cut and pulled until it was finally released.  I scrap that dress, cut out the pattern to another one, pin its’ seam and put it through the sewing machine.  Almost immediately, the damn needle broke.  I go into my sewing needle stash and replace it.  Started back sewing and it happened again!  Like a dummy, I kept doing the same thing.  Replacing the needle, starting the machine again and watching the needle break almost instantly.  What the hell??!  But something happened on the last needle, I did the same routine but this time the needle didn’t break off and fall into the machine like it did the other 4 times.  Nope, this time that needle broke off and flew towards my eye!
It was like it happened in slow motion.  I remember closing my eye and putting my hand up to it.  “What’s wrong?”  my fiancé runs over to ask.  “I think something hit my eye” I reply.  I move my hand and he finds the pointy end of the sewing needle laying on the my eyelashes.  When he shows me his findings…I almost fainted.
“What if that went into my eyeball?”
“What if I lost my eye or became blind in it??”
I was seriously freaking out!  I run over to the mirror to find my eye super, red and watery.  I couldn’t help but to stare at it.  Thank God for my eyelashes.  My real lashes.  (With mascara, of course.)  But seriously, who knows what would’ve happened?
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to end work for the night.  I had to continue on.  Yet another trip to the store for more needles.  A girl has deadlines to meet.  Before starting back up, I decided to do some troubleshooting to find out why the hell does this keep happening?  Apparently, it wasn’t threaded properly.  Why didn’t I look this up after the first time that shit happened??  Lesson learned.
Needless to say, the rest of the night was spent pushing the foot pedal and blocking my face.  It was a interesting night.   The release date is only 8 days away.  And would’ve all been worth it.
Thoughts?!  Has something like that ever happened to you??  Let me know in the comments…

  • Girl, I Have Some Stuff To Tell You!

Girl, I Have Some Stuff To Tell You!

A few months back, it was announced the Fashion Not Fear Collection was in the making.  At the time, I was working on a collection of graphic tees, hats, and phone accessories.  Which was released in September. Thanks to everyone who is supporting it.  I see you in your Fearless Woman Tee!  😉

    fashion not fear sketch

For as long as I can remember,  it has always been a dream to create clothes.  I guess it is because I learned the power of a good dress at a young age.  No one sat me down and said, “a good dress does this…..” It was more like a feeling I would get while wearing what I consider to be a good dress versus how I feel in an okay dress.  Good dresses make you feel confident, put a smile on your face, make you stand straighter, walk different…it’s just a positive, happy vibe.  An okay dress is just okay.  And don’t get me started on a bad dress!
selecting fabric for fashion not fear
I didn’t know if I was going to be a designer, buyer, stylist or how I would do it.  I just knew that I wanted to put women in dresses that made them feel good.  So the fact that I am telling you right now that I am in the beginning stages of extending the collection blows my mind!  Dresses, skirts, and matching sets are on the way.  Sketches have been drawn, fabric has been selected, stick pins have been placed…this is really happening!  Of course, you will be the first to know all of the details as they come along.  Stay tuned for that.

    2017 SPIRIT Fashion Show
I am also eager to announce that the students of Carnegie Mellon University has asked BLB to participate in their 2018 SPIRIT Fashion Show and we happily accepted.  The SPIRIT Fashion Show is the longest running fashion show.  It is held each year at Carnegie Mellon University by an organization called SPIRIT.  Which is a multicultural organization that aims to champion black awareness.  This is the 3rd year BLB has been involved in the event.  Each year, it gets bigger and better.  This year, the theme of the show is Understanding & Exploration of African Diaspora.  It has been interesting coming up with ways to creatively incorporate this idea through fashion but I have some tricks up my sleeve.  Plus, this will be the first time new FNF pieces will be hitting the runway.  You don’t want to miss it!  The show will be held on April 7th so come through and check it out if you will be in the Pittsburgh, PA area.  You can also go to spiritfashionshow.com for tickets and more information.
Do you love a good dress?  How do you think I should highlight the topic at the SPIRIT Fashion Show?  Let me know in the comments…
