The Life & Times Of A Fearless Entrepreneur Vol. 1

Its 2019!!!  Can you believe it??

I, for one, can’t even explain how happy I am that 2018 is over.  Last year, was probably the worst year of my life.  Not business-wise; on a personal level.

    cutting fabric

2018 started off amazing.  I made some new business connections, transitioned BLB from offering all types of womens clothes to becoming a dress only boutique.  Then, I took it to another level by creating a handcrafted collection.

The year was really going well for me!  After making clothes for models in the SPIRIT Fashion Show,  I knew designing and sewing the clothes was exactly what I should’ve been doing all along.  It just felt right.   Although, it was always part of the plan, I’ll admit that I was always too afraid to get started.  damn fear.

Selling Fashion Not Fear at various pop up shops, I was able to get instant feedback from people.   It’s so funny how scared I was to hear what people had to say about the dresses I created.  But it didn’t take long for me to realize that it was so important for me to suck it up (good or bad). Using their feedback as a tool to make the line even better was the key. And that is just what I was starting to do. Everything was going amazing.  Then the Summer hit…

mama and nephew holding hands at cemetery

I lost my Uncle and Dad within 2 months of each other during the Summer.  Two of the most important men in my life.  Gone.  Just like that.  Thing have been somewhat blurry since then.

The rest of the year was totally different. Spending every single moment with my Mom to support her became the priority. It affected everything. Things with BLB, FNF, Bae…it was all fucked up. Sewing became more frustrating than ever before.  Crying fits while at a pop up was common. Don’t get me started on blogging or writing of any kind.

It got to a point where I was counting the days since he had left us.  Eventually, my fiancé gave me a heart to heart talk about it.  “It’s not healthy to do that, baby.  I really don’t think you should be counting down the days like that.  Focus on more positive things about him.”  and more along those lines. He was right.  I was going down the wrong path and didn’t even realize it.

    lit christmas tree

Thanksgiving and Christmas was the worst, though.  We always have a big party on Christmas Eve and we kept the tradition alive this year.  However, my Mom and I spent the beginning of the party in her room crying like babies.  Mixing those tears with drinking New Orleans themed Hurricanes lead to a very interesting Christmas Eve.  To say the least.

NYE celebration began the way I usually bring it in. With family, shit talking and champagne.  We laughed, cried, played games, and cried even more reminiscing about those we have lost.  The next morning, I did my usual New Year routine.  I cracked open my journal and wrote down my goals for the year.  Normally, I have a page full of stuff.  But not this time.  This years list had about 10 things on them.  10 really, big goals that would put me and business on another level.  All of which, I can accomplish.

    hanging clothes on rack

2018 gave me a serious reality check that this will all come to an end at some point. It has pushed me to want to do more than ever before.  I mean, I’ve always known that death is enviable.  The year taught me to cherish my loved ones and hustle my ass off.

Balance will be the key in 2019. No doubt. I’ve already began to make some moves that will lead to entirely new territory.  I can’t wait to share the journey. Look out for my monthly Life & Times Of A Fearless Entrepreneur update.

For now though, I want to give 2018 a bag FUCK YOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUU!!!  And say Helloooooooooooooo, 2019, let’s do this!

  • Fearless Woman: Rosh Govindaraj (The Update)

Fearless Woman: Rosh Govindaraj (The Update)

    Happy Fearless Woman Friday 💙

This week we are doing something a lil’ bit different.  On this episode, we are updating you on one of our fearless women that was previously featured.  About 2 years ago, we introduced you to Rosh Govindaraj.  You can check out her full episode here.

Rosh is creator of Issara, a company that creates ethically made luxury leather goods.

    Issara Structure Tote

We recently caught up with her to get the latest on fearless living, her company and more.  Here is what she said:

Tell us about the idea behind Issara…

I got the idea when I was on a dive boat in Indonesia (June 2014) and spotted a bag on a guy sitting next to me. It was beautiful, and looked like it could withstand anything. So I asked where he got it and ended up accompanying him on a trip to a leather workshop where I had my own sketches made into a gorgeous bag for daily use. I was hooked – it was so much more special than just picking up something from the nearest store. I figured that I could use the power of the internet to bring that joy to people from my part of the world too. That was my bingo moment. I quit my job 3 weeks after that.

What has been the most difficult task about building this business?

The struggles I faced mostly related to cultural and generational differences. As a relatively young woman in a male-dominated, traditional industry I faced some unique challenges:

    – Older male artisans would either flat out refuse to deal with me, or deride my decision to travel alone in a language they thought I did not understand (I could).

    – Having almost every decision or request challenged by male artisans while witnessing the same requests being quickly fulfilled if a male colleague makes them

    – Being blackmailed and almost extorted (twice!).

These experiences make the wins particularly exhilarating though!

What has been the biggest payoff?

Being able to run a business that support artisans, produces beautiful, lasting and ethically made products for consumers, and having the flexibility of working from anywhere in the world!

What makes Issara different from other leather goods companies?

Our artisans are paid over three times the minimum wage, receive health insurance for themselves and their families and are enrolled in an interest-yielding savings program. Every aspect of the process is considered – our packaging is eco-friendly, tanneries are compliant with international environmental standards, and we’re working towards B-corporation certification. All these things constitute higher expenses that naturally impact the profit line. But being a social business, we measure Issara’s success not only in terms of dollars but also the social impact achieved. I think this dual-focus (on product quality as well as ethical production) will pay off in the long term as people start to appreciate the social gains.

What has changed since the last time we talked to you?

Keeping in line with the desire to create long lasting, luxury quality items that simplify your life, we launched a second collection, a tech-enabled collection, this time on Kickstarter. Technology has positively impacted so many aspects of our lives that it simply made sense to combine it with the items we carry every day. So I reached out to every reputable tracking technology company I could find (around 7 of them) and tested devices from each one. We chose to partner with the world leader in tracking technology (Trackr) due to the superior functionality of their tracking device, mobile app usability, ultra slim profile, anodized steel case and easy replaceability of the batteries (this was very important in keeping with our sustainable ethos – there are popular trackers out there where the entire tracker has to be replaced and this doesn’t sit well with us).

So, we heard about your Kickstarter campaign, how did it go?

The campaign was successful and we received amazing press from Forbes, Huffpost and various other publications. Even Guy Kawasaki tweeted our campaign, which was super exciting!

What can we expect next from Issara?

I’m working on another line of minimalist goods to simplify your daily life (though not just leather this time around!).

  • Rebates Zone Interview | BLB

    Rebates Zone Interview | BLB

I love online shopping!  It’s one of my favorite conveniences to date.  I’m guilty of spending hours looking for the perfect curtains, or shoes that I really “need”.  But no matter how full my shopping cart gets, there’s one thing that I ALWAYS do before continuing to checkout.   That one thing is doing my research to see if I can get a discount.  Oh yes, I’m all about getting the best bang for my buck! 😉

It usually goes something like this.  I do a search through my email to see if the company has sent me any coupons.  That’s one of the reasons that I always subscribe to receive newsletters from companies that I really like.  I slide all of them into a folder, then search them for coupons when I’m ready to order.  That method almost always works.  But if not, my second option is to do a Google search for that company.  This is a hit or miss method simply because most of the coupons that pop up have already expired.

As you can see, I take it seriously!

Luckily, I’ve found a solution!  Ever heard of Rebateszone.com?  It is a website that offers access to coupon codes to over 10,000 stores!  Everything from shoes to children clothes, beauty products and more!  So when Kyle Ward from Rebateszone offered to do an interview about Blue Labels Boutique, I happily replied, “Heck yes!”    I have included the interview below:

Being able to buy your clothes and accessories is a huge convenience but buying online always carries the risk of delivering poor quality products. Blue Labels Boutique was launched in 2013 to provide people access to bold and fearless items of clothing and accessories and so far it has been highly successful in its mission. Blue Labels Boutique takes great pride in providing the best online shopping experience possible.

We were lucky enough to get in touch with the management of Blue Labels Boutique and Kristie Glenn graciously answered all the questions we asked.

    1. How has been the experience of selling fashion accessories and clothes online so far?

It has been quite an experience, to say the least! Blue Labels Boutique has only been open for a short amount of time. The only thing I knew when I started is that I loved being able to express myself through style and I wanted to share that passion with others. So everything from website design, marketing, and all things involved with opening a new business was completely new to me. It has been fun and difficult learning new things, meeting new people across the world, and increasing my knowledge in being a fashion entrepreneur. Those experiences have made the bumps along the road worth it.

    1. You offer dozens of kinds of clothes in a range of sizes, what kinds of issues do you face in the handling of inventory from such a broad range?

Handling the inventory is no easy task. The great thing about my boutique is that styles are available limited quantities. So the inventory is constantly changing. I do a weekly inventory check. It’s pretty easy as long as I keep the numbers updated because the site is set up to send me a notification when an item is sold out or is close to selling out.

    1. How has been the response of your customers to the idea of buying their dresses and accessories online?

In the beginning, the customer response was slow due to low traffic and minimal advertisement but the customers’ response has steadily grown as the boutique has worked to create a brand. Social media and the traveling pop-up shops that we offer have helped to increase customers’ response greatly. It’s been really exciting!

    1. Which kind of dresses do you think are the most popular at the moment?

Right now, the most popular trend in dresses is the off the shoulder style. Everyone is rocking everything from mini dresses to maxi dresses, as long as they have the off the shoulder sleeve style!

    1. What are your plans for the future and where do you see the company in a few years?

In a few years, I see Blue Labels Boutique being known as the top shopping destination for fearless women who want a curated selection of unique women’s clothes and accessories. Not only that but to have expanded the message to live fashionably, fearless. Because fear holds you back but fashion will take you places!

I hope this gives you a bit more behind the scenes look about BLB.  And don’t forget about saving time and money at  RebatesZone.com during your next online shopping excursion.

Are a coupon code user or no?
