Making The Fashion Not Fear Dress That Was In An Art Exhibit

Last year, I told you about an invite I received to make a dress that will be put in an art exhibit from October 2019 through February 2020.

Destined By Design: A Celebration Of African American Fashion was the name of the exhibit. How could I say no? It was one of my first times making a dress that was for special occasions. And it was definitely the first time I ever had something that I created in an art display. It was such an honor!

If you didn’t get a chance to visit, you truly missed out. The talent made by other black dress and jewelry designers was amazing. Here is a look back at the process of making the dress and how it turned out.

Thanks to the curator who invited me to put a dress on display along with family, friends, and everyone who came out to check it out! It means the world!!

I was thinking about having a contest to give the dress away to one lucky winner. What are your thoughts on that and the dress?? Let me know in the comments…

Sooo…The Show Was Cancelled But The Fashion Continues! Here Is A Look At Upcoming Designs For New Fashion Not Fear.

A few weeks ago, I started working on a new collection for the annual SPIRIT Fashion Show that I’ve been showcasing at for the past few years.

Unfortunately, this years’ show was cancelled due to the pandemic. But it is on for next year, so no worries.

I had already sketched out the 8 looks that I was going to be making for the show. One style was completely finished and I was putting the final touches on the second look when I got the notice about it being cancelled.

No biggie, it was time to make a pivot to my designs! Not really so much the styles but the fabrics. It was no longer going to necessary for me to create 8 looks that had fabrics that coordinated.

The new handmade pieces being added to the collection have the feminine details FNF is known for but I wanted to add some dramatic sleeves in there too. I just love a good sleeve, I can’t help myself.

Here are some of the details you will see in the first two pieces set to be released this week!

This rack will be full of new designs soon. Stay tuned for these two new releases that will be coming out this week.

BTS Pics Of How Some Of The Magic Happens

Creating pieces for the Fashion Not Fear Collection is hands down the one thing I enjoy more than anything else in the world.  Sourcing fabrics, cutting patterns, sketching new ideas, the frustrations of getting shit caught up in a sewing machine…I love it all.  I really do!

Its kind of like my baby.  I nurture it every single day.  Little by little, it is growing into something that I become more and more proud of every day.  Check out these behind the scene shots to get a sneak peek into part of my process.

  • Denver, Co Had My Creative Juices Going…

Denver, Co Had My Creative Juices Going…

Since I was a little girl, I’ve always taken some type of trip for my birthday.  I think the obsession started because of my mom.  The first birthday trip I can remember I was super young but I remember that she took me and the family to a different city.  We spent the weekend shopping, going to a theme park, and chilling in a nice hotel.  This planted the seed.  At that moment I knew I had to do this every year.

I began working at a young age, so it was nothing for me to continue the tradition as a teenager and through my 20s.  Lucky for me, my fiancé loves to travel and the tradition of it all, so it’s been super easy to keep this going!

Once I started BLB, somehow things changed.  These trips became less about celebrating my born day and more about BLB.  It’s more of a fashion roadtrip than birthday celebration.  Instead of shopping for me, I find myself looking for something to offer at BLB or for a great pop up location.  Rather than enjoying the night life, I explore the city for inspiration.  “What’s the fashion vibe like here?”  “Would this be a good city to do a pop up?”  Its a whole thing!

This past weekend I visited Denver, Colorado for my B-day celebration.  And I was up to my usual antics.  This city has always been on my bucket list for various reasons from the healthy lifestyle culture, mountains views and laws. ☺️  Besides, this girl loves a good road trip!  Here are some things I saw in Denver that fueled some fashion inspiration.

I am happy to say that Denver went beyond my expectations.  Bold colors shined at every turn.  Not just from the art but it was found in the bright green grass,  rich red rocks, and shades of the mountains that ranged from blues, greens, purples and more.  This vibrant, modern city definitely ignited my creative energy.  Stay tuned to see what styles develop  from this awesome trip!

  • How To Coordinate With Bae Without Looking Cray

How To Coordinate With Bae Without Looking Cray

Back in the day, dressing exactly like your sister, cousin, or BF was the thing to do.  There was a time when I would coordinate all of my outfits with my BFF.  You couldn’t tell us anything as we pranced around the school yard in matching pleated skirts and Keds with red shoelaces.

Fast forward to my teen years and things were exactly the opposite.  You wouldn’t catch me dead wearing the same thing as anyone else.  As a teen, it was all about showing off uniqueness plus, I was just too cool for that or so I thought.

The idea of coordinating with your bae as a grown woman may sound crazy enough to make you want to run away.  But don’t put on your running shoes just yet.  Adulthood has taught me lots of things including that coordinating with your boo can be fun and stylish!  You will be happy to know that you don’t have to look like a couple who needs to be checked into an insane asylum the next time you two dress alike.  Check out these 5 outfits that will inspire you for the next time you plan to coordinate with your boo.

  • When Fashion Meets Art

definition of fashion, definition of art

Have you ever thought about how fashion and art go together like peanut butter and jelly? Just looking at the definitions alone, it’s plain to see that they certainly compliment each other.  Simply put…fashion is wearable art.  The artist or wearer is expressing themselves to the world with how they style the outfit.

Think about it, you probably didn’t design the outfit that you are wearing right now.  But you shopped for pieces that you found to be beautiful and displayed them on your blank canvas (or body 😉) however you were inspired to do so.  People interpret things differently so there’s no right or wrong to it.  Yet another benefit to being unique!  It’s all about how the art influenced you and how you choose to convey that.

Since most fashion coveters recognize style as a form of expression, it’s easy to appreciate how other artists decorate their blank canvas.  Check out these original pieces of art and the outfits that were born from their inspiration!

Inspiration comes from everything you see, hear, and feel throughout your daily life, if you let it.  So it doesn’t hurt to take a moment to stop and allow the things around to inspire you. You never know how you will be painting your blank canvas next!

    What inspires your style?
