3 Ways To Beat Your Fear Of Public Speaking

Speaking in front of a crowd of has always terrified me. Which is weird because I’m a very talkative person.  And I’m serious when I say that. When I first started dating my fiancé, he used to tell me, “damn, you talk a lot” all of the time. In the beginning, I would take offense to it. Now, it’s to a point that he thinks something is wrong with me if I’m not talking. Go figure.

All of that talking though, never made me feel comfortable about speaking in front of people. For example, one time we were driving through the Canadian border from New York and got stopped by the police at the border. They simply asked for my birthday.  I stammered and stuttered on that question so much that they ended up making us get out of the car for a full inspection. Because I was “acting suspicious”.   The crowd of policemen made me so nervous that I couldn’t even remember my birthday.

So, imagine how I felt when the curator of the Destined By Design exhibit asked me to be on the panel. Me?  Talking on a panel in front of a crowd? I don’t know about that.  Of course that wasn’t my reply when she asked. I fearlessy responded, “I’d love to!”

Now that I accepted the invite, I had no choice but to make it happen. That’s actually how I conquer my fears. I say, “yes” to everything, no matter how fearful I am. Because if I don’t, how will I know what I can do?  Nothing pushes you past fear more than biting the bullet and jumping in…head first.

When the day finally arrives; I’m actually feeling good about everything. Although, I’m sure the glass of saki helped.

I put on the outfit I made to wear from the event and headed to the event.

    Public speaking

After the moderator introduced the designers; the questions came rolling in.

    “What inspired your designs?”

“What was the first thing you ever made as a designer?”

“If you can recommend only one style of dress; what style would it be?”

My answers rolled off my tongue like I do this for a living.  Things went so great that I was kind of disappointed that it was over.

    Public speaking
Here is what I learned about speaking in public

#1 Be Confident – If you don’t believe in yourself and what you’re saying, no one else will.

#2 Be Yourself – The great part of being you is that you are you and no one can be you.  Everyone has a different story. Don’t try to use words you wouldn’t normally use. Don’t address topics that you don’t really know anything about. Be genuine. Most people can see through the fakeness. Plus, who the hell wants to be fake anyway??

#3 Most People Are Nice – One of my things about speaking in public is that I pondered whether or not people will be nice to me.  Are they gonna say mean things? Or ask shady questions?  Honestly, I don’t take nasty people. I just don’t. So, being ready to “check someone back” has always been in the back of my mind. But I’ve found that most people are nice and welcoming. Leave the preconceived notions about people at home.

    Public speaking

Since the event, I’ve been asked to be on another panel during DreamWeek 2020 in San Antonio. Guessing that means it went pretty good, huh??

What about you? Have you ever done any public speaking?  If so, what tips do you use? Do you find my tips helpful??  Let me know in the comments…

The Life & Times Of A Fearless Entrepreneur Vol. 1

Its 2019!!!  Can you believe it??

I, for one, can’t even explain how happy I am that 2018 is over.  Last year, was probably the worst year of my life.  Not business-wise; on a personal level.

    cutting fabric

2018 started off amazing.  I made some new business connections, transitioned BLB from offering all types of womens clothes to becoming a dress only boutique.  Then, I took it to another level by creating a handcrafted collection.

The year was really going well for me!  After making clothes for models in the SPIRIT Fashion Show,  I knew designing and sewing the clothes was exactly what I should’ve been doing all along.  It just felt right.   Although, it was always part of the plan, I’ll admit that I was always too afraid to get started.  damn fear.

Selling Fashion Not Fear at various pop up shops, I was able to get instant feedback from people.   It’s so funny how scared I was to hear what people had to say about the dresses I created.  But it didn’t take long for me to realize that it was so important for me to suck it up (good or bad). Using their feedback as a tool to make the line even better was the key. And that is just what I was starting to do. Everything was going amazing.  Then the Summer hit…

I lost my Uncle and Dad within 2 months of each other during the Summer.  Two of the most important men in my life.  Gone.  Just like that.  Thing have been somewhat blurry since then.

The rest of the year was totally different. Spending every single moment with my Mom to support her became the priority. It affected everything. Things with BLB, FNF, Bae…it was all fucked up. Sewing became more frustrating than ever before.  Crying fits while at a pop up was common. Don’t get me started on blogging or writing of any kind.

It got to a point where I was counting the days since he had left us.  Eventually, my fiancé gave me a heart to heart talk about it.  “It’s not healthy to do that, baby.  I really don’t think you should be counting down the days like that.  Focus on more positive things about him.”  and more along those lines. He was right.  I was going down the wrong path and didn’t even realize it.

    lit christmas tree

Thanksgiving and Christmas was the worst, though.  We always have a big party on Christmas Eve and we kept the tradition alive this year.  However, my Mom and I spent the beginning of the party in her room crying like babies.  Mixing those tears with drinking New Orleans themed Hurricanes lead to a very interesting Christmas Eve.  To say the least.

NYE celebration began the way I usually bring it in. With family, shit talking and champagne.  We laughed, cried, played games, and cried even more reminiscing about those we have lost.  The next morning, I did my usual New Year routine.  I cracked open my journal and wrote down my goals for the year.  Normally, I have a page full of stuff.  But not this time.  This years list had about 10 things on them.  10 really, big goals that would put me and business on another level.  All of which, I can accomplish.

2018 gave me a serious reality check that this will all come to an end at some point. It has pushed me to want to do more than ever before.  I mean, I’ve always known that death is enviable.  The year taught me to cherish my loved ones and hustle my ass off.

Balance will be the key in 2019. No doubt. I’ve already began to make some moves that will lead to entirely new territory.  I can’t wait to share the journey. Look out for my monthly Life & Times Of A Fearless Entrepreneur update.

For now though, I want to give 2018 a bag FUCK YOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUU!!!  And say Helloooooooooooooo, 2019, let’s do this!

How are you feeling about the New Year? Let me know in the comments…

Why Hello There Beauty #Girlbosses Interview

I had the honor of being interviewed by Emily Crawford on, Why Hello Beauty,  which is an Australian-based beauty and lifestyle blog.  They have a #girlboss series which features women who are business owners to see what it’s like to walk in their shoes everyday.

As a fashion entrepreneur, I wear many hats.  (Which doesn’t bother me, as long as they match with my outfit!)  But running a boutique,  writing and contributing to fashion editorials, runway shows and more can make for quite a bumpy ride.  Admittedly, coffee and champagne certainly helps to make it alot smoother!  😉

So, of course, I was more than happy to oblige when I was asked to quickly give a lil’ more insight into what my day to day life is like.
